Winter Warmer Soup Challenge

1 November - 2 December 2022

Indulge your pupils’ imaginations and inspire them to learn that cooking is fun and rewarding with the Kids Country Winter Warmer Soup Challenge.

Stage 1: Create a soup recipe

The challenge is to devise a recipe for a Winter Warmer soup. There is no cooking involved at this stage – just creativity! We encourage pupils to think about what type of locally grown food is available in the autumn; if it comes from a plant or animal, if it’s been farmed, caught or grown at home, and which smells and tastes remind them of autumn time. They can add a twist to an existing recipe or invent one from scratch.

Stage 2: Preliminary Judging

Eight teams will be invited to prepare their soup at their school with support/teacher whilst being observed by our professional judges. They will have 60 minutes to prepare and cook four portions of soup and set up an accompanying tabletop display, which should include the written explanations submitted at the entry stage of the competition. The soups will be sampled and judged alongside the tabletop displays by our catering professionals. The top three soups will then go through to the Final Tasting round, this year MasterChef finalist 2018 Simon Spooner will make and judge the soups.

Stage 3: Final soup tasting with MasterChef Finalist 2018 Simon Spooner

The final tasting – Simon Spooner will reproduce the top three soups according to the recipes, this will be videoed. Simon will then have a Zoom meeting with each individual team, to discuss their soup and share his observations/comments on their recipe.

The prize

The winning team will receive £200 for their school, a trophy to display for one year, and a behind the scenes visit to a local farm for each winning pupil and their teacher.

The two runner up teams will also get the opportunity of the same type of visit at a local farm all subject to Covid 19 restrictions.
